Shop Small This Small Business Saturday & Holiday Season (Nov 28)

It’s that time of year again, and everyone at Numa is excited to spread the word about Small Business Saturday!  This annual event means a lot to us, and we hope it can mean a lot to you, too.

What is Small Business Saturday?

Small Business Saturday (SBS) is an annual shopping event that was actually the brainchild of American Express. In 2010, during the Great Recession, AmEx decided to launch SBS to encourage people to patronize and support their favorite small businesses. The U.S. Senate took note and passed a unanimous resolution in support of the day the following year.

Since it happens right after Thanksgiving, SBS is a great way to harness the holiday spirit (and the annual uptick in seasonal shopping) for the smaller, local businesses that are the cornerstone of every successful neighborhood. These businesses make a huge difference in the public’s everyday lives, but they’re often passed over amid wave after wave of corporate “Black Friday” promotions.

At Numa, we care deeply about (and work with many of) the small businesses that help so many American communities thrive. That’s why we’re raising awareness about the importance of Shopping Small!

When is Small Business Saturday this year?

The SBS holiday happens every year on the last Saturday in November, placing it between the 26th and the 30th. Small Business Saturday 2020 is set to occur on November 28th. We encourage all of our readers to devote some of their holiday spending to the awesome SBS event that always fits right between the flurry of sales on Friday and “Cyber” Monday.

Why Is It So Important to Shop Small in 2020?

This year has been particularly harrowing for many of your favorite local businesses. The Wall Street Journal estimated that up to 25,000 stores might close for good by the end of 2020.  That’s more than twice as many as the 9,832 that closed last year. Small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy, creating two-thirds of new jobs and accounting for 44% of U.S. economic activity.

Luckily, small businesses are also rising to meet the challenges of COVID-19. Since the onset of the pandemic, 71.7% of SMBs have improved their digital capabilities, and nearly two-thirds of consumers expect and appreciate the expansion of curbside pickup opportunities from their favorite brands. By August 2020, 86% of SMBs were at least partially open and hoping to get their customers engaged once again.

Let’s get out there, take advantage of their contactless and safe SBS shopping practices, and show our support!

Support your local businesses this holiday season. Shop Small.

As an AmEx partner and vendor for many small businesses, Numa is a big fan of Small Business Saturday.  We believe wholeheartedly in the value that these companies bring to each community, not only in terms of their products and services but in everything they do. As small bakery owner Kym Rodgers explained to AmEx:

“Every purchase from cookies to cakes helps to keep our doors open. It helps to keep our employees working. It helps to fund our community outreach. We use money from our sales to feed the community for our Free Lunch Friday Program. The community supports us, and we support the community.”

– Kym Rodgers, The Brooklyn Sweet Spot

Now is the time to Shop Small and support small businesses like The Sweet Spot that promote community outreach in local neighborhoods day in and day out.  And it’s never been easier to find great small businesses to support!  Check out the Shop Small Map from AmEx to see all the places where other customers have recently shown support (with their wallets), and plan out your own Small Business Saturday ideas.

Think big, shop small, and shop local. We’re rooting for you.
